Haitian Proverb November 23rd

“Lontan se kochon ki te konn di ‘rm, rm.’ Jodi a se moun kap di ‘rm, rm.'”

Translation: “A long time ago, it was the pig that used to grunt “rm, rm”. Today, people are grunting “rm, rm”. Meaning, good manners are less common and people are acting more and more like animals.”

Warning: this post is based solely on my opinion…and may contain a little ranting. 🙂

Haitian Proverb Week 47, Heart of God Haiti

In just a few weeks I will be heading home for a visit with family and friends. I am beyond excited for the diner breakfasts and lattes and salads that await me…and for the fact that I will get to enjoy all of these treats while hanging out with my favorite people. But there is one aspect of American life that I do not look forward to: phone faces.

What I mean by this is that at some point in the past few years it has become socially acceptable to have your phone in your face while in the company of real live people. I cannot stand it. To me, it is just as rude as grunting and acting like a pig. When did visiting friends turn into sitting awkwardly on their couch as they Facebook stalk various people and surf the web for hilarious ecards??? Seriously.

One thing I envy about the simple life up here in the Haitian mountains is that when people are together, they are actually together. They talk face to face. They have discussions that aren’t interrupted by checking their email real quick. They laugh together about something that happened, not at something someone just found on the Internet on their iPhone.

Phone face is not okay. And just as a warning, while I am home, if you whip out your phone just to check Facebook or Twitter or anything Internet related I will straight up walk out on you. I am taking a page out of my grandpa’s book on this one; he tells people how it is and has himself scolded friends for texting while playing horseshoes with him. So again don’t be surprised if when you finish that level of Candy Crush and put down your phone I am nowhere in sight. I have left to find some people who are more like my Haitian mountain friends, who actually want to talk and laugh and enjoy some time with a real person. 🙂
