Djondjon leve kote l’ vle, menm anba jouk poul.
A mushroom springs up where it chooses, even under the chicken roost…meaning…Nothing can stop spontaneous laughter or prevent little pleasures. (Fresh chicken droppings kill most plants. Mushrooms are delicacies.)
So I realize I have been slacking in posting these proverbs. My bad. But really nothing jumped out at me and it didn’t feel right to force it. But as I looked through the sayings again today this one caught my attention.
Living and working at the center has presented its challenges. For instance, I still have yet to move into the new room we built 2 months ago. Lesson learned: cement takes a long time to fully dry so don’t build stuff at the peak of rainy season. It is frustrating having to postpone English classes as we wait for the new classroom to be completely ready. Right now the kids come in to color and play card games but because one side of the room is still wet, the side reserved for class is cluttered and not suitable for ‘real’ English class yet. This among other small frustrations that come with working in Haiti can put me in a funk from time to time. But the kids pull me out of it every time. Their laughter and happiness. Their spontaneous songs and dances. The ways they help each other and the women who work here without complaint…well usually:) Their repeated pleas to let them drive me to the states (they haven’t gotten that whole ocean barrier thing yet or the fact that none of them know how to drive let alone could reach the gas pedal).
All of the other ‘stuff’ is completely shadowed by the way these kids make me laugh and smile. No matter what new road block has popped up it cannot prevent the pleasure of being around these 18 awesome little people every day and I thank God for reminding me how blessed I am to have them in my life.
Laughing and crying with you and for you. That’s why God made children so precious and precocious…so we would hang in there. I’m praying daily for you.
