Haitian Proverb October 24th

“Kasav kanni bon lakay.”

Translation: “Moldy cassava is good at home. Meaning, even moldy bread tastes good when one is home.”

Haitian Proverb Week 43, Heart of God Haiti

I love fall. I love the weather. I love going to the apple orchards in my hometown. I love all the corn mazes and pumpkin patches. I love pumpkin pie custard from the local ice cream shop. I love fall. But unfortunately none of the things I love about this season exist in the mountains of Haiti. So I have been feeling a little homesick these past few weeks. And not just for fall but for home itself.

There is something about being home that just immediately relaxes and comforts a person. Not sure I would go as far as to say that being home makes moldy bread taste good. But it certainly makes it easier to look past little bumps in the road of life… like if you went to make a sandwich but the bread was moldy. Here if that happened I would be mildly devastated because I am only able to buy bread once a week when I go to town so odds are that sandwich was to be a savored treat.

Being home can make so many things bearable simply because of familiarity. At home I could walk down the street, by myself, to the store and buy a loaf of bread no problem. Or I could go to my mom or grandma’s house and “borrow” some of there sandwich making materials. The comfort of familiarity and family is something you don’t realize exists really until you are far from it for a long time. So even though I will miss fall completely and all the pumpkin flavored treats that come with it, I know that when I come visit in the winter at least I will be home.
