Haitian Proverb November 19th

“Byen pre pa lakay.”

Translation: “Close is not home.”

Anyone who has ever been on a road trip with kids know the age-old question, “Are we there yet?” I remember being a kid coming home from a long ride, and getting so excited when I’d see the lights and signs come into view as we pulled into our town. But just being in town was not the same as pulling into your driveway and getting out of the car. Almost there is not as good as being there.

From the Christian perspective, one may say it this way: “Why settle for good, when God wants to give you what’s best?” Paul says,

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

As we are conformed to Christ’s image, we are becoming who God want’s us to be, but we aren’t home yet. Let me encourage you, keep pressing on.
