Haitian Proverb September 8th

“Dan pouri gen fos sou bannann mi.”

Translation: “Rotten teeth have strength over ripe bananas. Meaning, even the weak have their strengths.”

Haitian Proverb September 8th, Heart of God Haiti

I love this proverb. The imagery is perfect. Rotten teeth, though they may seem useless, are still able function. When we feel useless, there is still something within us that keeps us going. Even when we feel our weakest we have not yet been completely defeated. There have been days here when I feel drained and unable to take another step forward. We all have those days throughout life, when nothing goes right, when nothing works out, when we just want to give up. Thankfully we are never without God’s strength in us. He pushes us, sometimes drags us I will admit, onward. I like to think that among all the challenges we face each day, each week, each month, God throws in a few ripe bananas to remind us that we do have strength, strength through Him, that we are never as weak and helpless as we may feel sometimes. With Him we can do all things, ripe bananas or otherwise.
