Exploring Modern Technology

Anthony Ingram, Living Life On Mission With Jesus

Today I had a very fun day with our kids at the center. It was a mostly clear sky when I arrived, which means my AccessHaiti wifi hotspot will get a decent signal. This is beneficial because as our kids are quickly moving through their understanding of iPhone technology, we now need internet.

The very first thing they learned when I came was that my phone takes pictures. And they love having their picture taken. They still do, but now have to go out of their way to get an original, like this one in which Jean Fiderse took my glasses and wouldn’t let me have them back until I got this shot.

Next they figured out that the camera not only takes pictures, but that it also takes video. I honestly cannot tell you how many different video versions of the same song I have. They certainly aren’t camera shy to be sure. However, they have now learned about the possibility of video calling through Skype or FaceTime. This lets them see some of the people they have met who have gone back to the U.S., as well as meet new people through me calling friends back home. With this, they get to be on camera showing off, but there is someone on the other end seeing it. It is beyond their wildest imaginations, and I’m afraid there’s no going back.

Today, the internet was strong enough that we were able to video chat with my mom, grandma, and cousin who have been some of my biggest prayer advocates over the work here and over specific needs at the orphanage. I am slowly trying to coax them to overcome their fear of flying and make a visit, and what could be better than to hear these kids singing “I am happy to see you today?”

After that we made a FaceTime call to my home pastor’s family, specifically to chat with his 6-year-old, Boston (though the whole family was in on the conversation). Their daughter Hayley happened to be there for a visit and also captured a video on her phone which I have shared on the HG Haiti Facebook page.

Finally, after they asked for more, and wanting to see HGIM President, Jan Ross, Pastor Paul, Erin, Katie, and anyone else they’d ever met, we decided to call HG Haiti Director, Dave Young. They sang to him just like the rest, as he carried his iPad through his business office, proudly showing the kids to all of his co-workers.

I had a lot of fun with this, and am glad there was much joy shared on the other end of the line as well. Sometimes it’s little things like this that make up for all the stress of life in the third world.
